Jonathan Wolken

Person
Biography
Jonathan Wolken played a pivotal role with Pilobolus, not only as one of the group's four founding members, but also as the one who suggested that they name themselves after a sun-loving fungus he had learned about from his bio-physicist father. In an interview about the company's unconventional origins, he said, “We created a circus and then ran off and joined it.” Wolken made his Pillow debut with Pilobolus in 1974 and remained with the company throughout its many appearances here, culminating with their 2008-2009 creative residency in the Duke Theater. He was 60 when he died on June 13, 2010 of complications from a stem-cell transplant.
