Summary:
"This project of the American Dance Festivas (ADF) -- "The Black Tradition in American Modern Dance" -- originated in conversations with the late Alvin McDuffie, one of ADF's faculty.  He was concerned that his students did not know about the contributions made by black dancers and choreographers to modern dance.  The ADF was also concerned that major dances by 20th century black choreographers were in danger of being lost.  ADF accordingly decided to make the black tradition in American modern dance the current focus of its ongoing Humanities-and-Dance programs." -- from the Foreword
