The Shalamite Maid Costume, The Song of Songs (ensemble)

A headdress, wrap-over skirt, silk beaded dress, and a fabric cap/headdress. Worn by La Meri in the role of The Shalamite Maid in The Song of Songs.

Item Details:
The costumes for The Song of Songs were designed by Ted Shawn after Tissot and Moreau and made by George Horn.
C-234_a A tall buckram cone shaped headdress covered in silver lurex and seed bead trim. The headdress is decorated with pink, cream, and pale green pearls. Ropes of pearls also hang down on each side of the headdress.
C-234_b A long wrap-over skirt with a heavily beaded waistband. The skirt is made from a striped satin fabric (yellow, green, and purple) and godets (inserted panels) of cream and lurex fabric. The skirt is decorated with colored glass gems. The skirt fastens at the center front and is then open.
C-234_c A strapless dress of pale pink silk chiffon. The dress fastens at the front with hooks and bars (La Meri put this costume on on stage so the fastenings are minimal). The dress is decorated with ropes of pearls around the top of the bodice, waist, and hem, as well as in hanging loops. Large clusters of pearls and colored glass jewels are set in the center of the bodice and waist. The hem is edged with seed beads.
C-234_d A small cap with a deep panel around the back, made form the same fabric at C-234_b (green, purple, and yellow satin). The cap is edged with lurex fringe and lurex woven braid.
