Summary:
"The Cachuca created a furore when Fanny Elssler introduced it to Paris in 1836, and was danced by her all over Europe and in America until she retired in 1851. In the great flowering of ballet under the influence of the Romantic movement, it came to represent the earthly side of ballet, in contrast to the spiritual side which had its ideal interpreter in Marie Taglioni. The Cachucha was so associated with Fanny Elssler that few other ballerinas dared attempt it, and after Elssler's retirement it was abandoned and forgotten. But Friedrich Albert Zorn, an obscure German teacher who saw Elssler dance it, had recorded the choreography in his system of dance notation, and years later he included it in his textbook on ballet technique. Thus it was possible, after it had slumbered for more than a hundred years, to awaken it into life again. Deciphered by Ann Hutchinson and styled by Felisa Victoria, the dance was introduced for Ballet for All and, in 1969, for the centenary of the Vienna State Opera. This book contains a fully detailed score of the dance in Labanotation, together with a simplified verbal description and articles on its history and its reconstruction." --- from included book description.
