Norman Morrice

Person
Biography
Norman Morrice, a former artistic director of the Royal Ballet and Ballet Rambert, died in January 2008 at the age of 76.  An important early chapter in his career happened at the Pillow when Ballet Rambert made its U.S. debut here in 1959.  As a 27-year-old dancer with the company who had only made his first ballet the year before, Morrice received international attention when Rambert programmed this breakthrough work, Two Brothers, at the Pillow.  (Shawn had seen it in London soon after its premiere and declared it "a work of genius.")  It was Morrice's idea to change Ballet Rambert into a contemporary dance troupe, and it is now known as the Rambert Dance Company.  Among those who credit Morrice as a chief influence is Christopher Wheeldon, who was his student in the Royal Ballet Choreographic Group.  John Lindquist photographed Morrice here in his own Two Brothers during Ballet Rambert's 1959 debut.
