Bruce Becker

Person
Biography
Bruce Becker began his training with Donald McKayle and was a dance award winner at New York's High School of Performing Arts. The nephew of modern dance pioneer Helen Tamiris, Becker embarked on a performing career at an early age, working with the companies of May O'Donnell, Tamiris-Nagrin, and Norman Walker. He was later a resident soloist with Batsheva in Israel, and appeared in several Broadway shows in addition to serving as Dance Captain for the original production of Cabaret. Becker's first Pillow appearance was with Norman Walker's company in 1961, and he returned the following season as part of the stellar cast that Walker assembled to revive Ted Shawn's Kinetic Molpai for the first time. After yet another appearance here with Walker in 1966, he joined the Pillow faculty in 1973 and performed that same summer on a duet program with Jane Kosminsky. Their 5 x 2 Dance Company returned to the Pillow in 1975, and he continued to lead the group as it transformed into "5 x 2 Plus" in the 1980s. In later years, he lived in Stuyvesant, NY, where he practiced graphic design and succumbed to Parkinson's disease at age 68 in September 2011.
