Embroidered Black Silk Obi, O-Mika

Costume

Identifier
C-014
Date:
1913
Description:
Black silk obi. Most likely worn by Ruth St. Denis in O-Mika.

Item Details:
Black silk obi decorated with two pieces of embroidery. The top piece shows a dragon embroidered in lurex thread (it matches the embroidery on costume C-013). The bottom section also shows a dragon and is completely covered in gold lurex thread. Attached are two pieces of stuffed fabric and one long strip of black silk backed with cotton. Although the piece appears to be an obi, photographs of St. Denis show her holding it to the front of her body like muff. This piece is quite badly made and appears to formed from bits of other costumes.
