Person
Biography
Jonathan Phelps was most widely known for his performances with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (1992-98), while he was also an inspiring teacher and an accomplished choreographer.  With roots in central Pennsylvania and a degree from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, Jonathan launched his professional career at the Pillow as a charter member of the Jamison Project in 1988, after which he danced with Donald Byrd and then Ailey.  For the past ten years, he performed with Walkerdance and taught worldwide, notably at the Pillow where he played a major role with the Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance Program.  After complications from heart surgery, Jonathan died in January 2009 at the age of 42.  He is remembered for his gentle and fun-loving spirit as well as for his award-winning choreography.  Jonathan is survived by partner Chet Walker, a brother, sister, niece, nephew, and legions of devoted students, fellow dancers, and dear friends.  The 2009 Jazz Happening was dedicated to his memory.
