Milorad Miskovitch

Person
Biography
Milorad Miskovitch was a Yugoslav-born dancer who became one of French ballet’s leading male stars in the 1940s and 50s. His matinee-idol looks and solid training caught the eye of choreographers like Maurice Béjart and Roland Petit, and he also danced in works by Americans including Ruth Page and Merce Cunningham. He originally planned to debut at the Pillow with Alicia Markova in 1958, but her cancellation delayed his arrival until 1964 when he appeared with Janine Monin in two pas de deux. He continued his dance career as a teacher and choreographer, and served as President of UNESCO’s dance council until 1994, after which he was made “Honorary President for Life.” That life term ended in 2013 in Nice, where he died at 85.
