“Dead reckoning” is a navigational term which refers to a situation where, in the absence of
the usual reference of the stars, you must intuit or approximate your position—and in doing
so, you run the real risk of error and losing your bearings. Inspired by a trip to Death Valley, I
witnessed the powerful forces and formations of nature and realized how vulnerable we are
to the forces unleashed by climate change. As the dance progresses, lime green snow begins
to fall from the dancers’ hands. Bit by bit, we radically transform our world.
